WeWriWa Sunday – Freedom Bound: Mateu

Freedom Bound Episode 3: Mateu

So here we are, Episode 3 is being rereleased on Amazon in just a week! New cover. Rebrand. And new edits to tighten it up.

My freshman effort at indie pubishing was too rushed and unpolished.  I had a long chat with my editor about it and we’ve been hashing out the rewrite. There’s more building upon on the characters of Corrie and Mat and their personal arcs along with braiding in the the story and series arcs. I may have bitten off more than a newbie could chew, two years ago.

What is in the new book? Why is it better? Why do you need it? There’s less naval gazing and more trust in the reader to understand and inhabit the world. Speaking of which, weaving the worldbuild into the character development has been my biggest challenge. This week’s excerpt comes in with Mat, our hero-dude, trying to have dinner in the food court and coming upon the meat market societal mores of Starbase 18. He attempts conversation telling the two women hitting on him where he’s from…

“Union of Democratic Meritocracies.” He sighed and wiped his mouth with a disposable serviette. “It’s far away from here. I’m not trying to be cold. Where I come from we don’t get in bed with strangers. It’s very different.”

“Oh,” said Jenny to his left. She nodded but the vacant look in her eyes told Mat all he needed to know.

“I’m not judging. It just… the way I am? I’m a square peg in a round hole. You might say as far as holes go, I’m not interested in yours.”

That was a straight up lie. Straight up like what was going on in his pants.

“At least not before I can appreciate the attached brain.” There, that should explain it. He tried a smile and in return got blank stares.

And that’s Episode 3’s clip this week.

Bodice Ripping Ninjas in Space! Freedom Bound is Firefly meets Buck Rogers with a bit of boudoir. Welcome to the Solar Flame universe where corporate suzerains control the universe, or do they? Each book unravels yet another thread of the Freedom Road for the reader to continually discover.

In Freedom Bound, Corrie Scott, late of Frobisher Corporation finds herself unleashed in enemy territory alone for the first time in her life. But she is plagued by the threat of corporate slavery and devilishly handsome Mat Parker. Together they must battle through ridiculous red tape, space pirates, and backstabbing double crosses. Can they trust each other long enough to win this dangerous game?

More of the series will be populating the other vendors this month.

  1. Wonderful dialogue from Mat, and exquisite (non-) reactions for his troubles!

P.S. Looks like some new feature in the comment box is insisting on trying to “authenticate” to my website and failing miserably. It’s kinda annoying having a dumb machine tell me I’m not a member of my own blog 🙁
